3D scanning for reverse engineering: parts rebuilt as CAD
3D scanning for reverse engineering rebuilds parts, assemblies and sculptures as clean, dimensioned CAD when no original drawings or models exist. Your team gets geometry it can design and fabricate from, so nobody measures twice.
What reverse engineering with 3D scanning is
Reverse engineering rebuilds an existing object as a drawing or model when the original drawings are missing or never existed. We scan the object with a terrestrial laser scanner, which measures every visible surface. The scans are aligned into one dataset, then rebuilt as CAD. Some teams call this scan to CAD.
A scan records a surface, not a design. The CAD rebuild turns those measured surfaces into clean geometry with dimensions, so your team can design from it, fabricate from it or replicate the original.
When you need reverse engineering
Order reverse engineering services when the object exists but the paperwork does not. Typical reasons:
- Parts or assemblies with no drawings or models, where you need a replacement or a copy.
- Custom assemblies such as stairs, railings, façade elements and canopies that a new part has to fit.
- Sculptures and ornament that need to be replicated or restored.
- Plant equipment and installed assemblies that need a dimensioned model for retrofit planning or checks.
- Objects that need a clean mesh for 3D printing or visual effects.

How a reverse engineering project works
Quote and scope
Tell us what needs rebuilding, where it is and what you need out of the CAD. Send any drawings you have, even outdated ones. Within one business day we reply with the method, the schedule and a fixed price.
Scan
We scan the object from many positions so every surface is covered, then align the scans into one dataset. See our 3D laser scanning survey.
Alignment and checks
The scans are aligned, cleaned and checked. This adds about 2–3 days after the field day.
CAD rebuild
We rebuild the object as clean, dimensioned CAD from the scan. Modeling time depends on the scope and is stated in your quote.
Handover
Files land in the formats your team opens, and we verify fabrication against the same record. Need a whole building modeled instead? See Scan to BIM services.
Accuracy and specs
CAD is only as accurate as the scan it is built from. Our scans are registered to 2–6 mm. Tell us the tolerance your part needs when you request a quote, so it is scoped before any modeling starts.
- Instrument: terrestrial laser scanner (Leica RTC360)
- Scan accuracy: registered to 2–6 mm
- CAD and drawing formats: DWG, DXF, PDF
- Mesh formats: OBJ, FBX, STL, GLB
- Confidentiality: NDA on request; data retained and shared on your terms
CAD and fabrication geometry
Fabrication geometry is field-verified geometry for stairs, railings, façades, canopies and custom assemblies, so shop drawings match the real object instead of the drawing set.
Zombra is part of Futura USA, an architectural metal fabricator in Miami. We know which dimensions get taken off the model and what happens on site when a field condition is off by half an inch, so CAD for architectural metalwork leaves here fabrication-ready, not just visually correct.
Who it’s for
Fabricators, plant and facility teams, restoration specialists and production teams order reverse engineering when the part they need is not on paper. Common uses by industry:
- 3D scanning for metal fabrication: stairs, railings, façades, canopies and custom assemblies captured as geometry the shop can work from.
- Industrial 3D laser scanning: plant equipment and installed assemblies modeled for retrofit planning and dimensional checks.
- Heritage 3D scanning: ornament and sculpture recorded for restoration, replication and archive.
- 3D scanning for film and VFX: sets, structures and objects captured as production-ready meshes.
Questions

Straight answers on scope, accuracy, formats and cost. Anything else, ask the capture lead directly.
Ask a questionWhat is 3D scanning for reverse engineering?
3D scanning for reverse engineering measures an existing part, assembly or sculpture and rebuilds it as clean, dimensioned CAD. It is used when the original drawings or models are missing.
What can you rebuild as CAD?
Parts, assemblies and sculptures, including architectural metalwork such as stairs, railings, façades and canopies. Tell us what needs rebuilding and what you need out of the CAD, and we scope it in your quote.
How accurate is the CAD?
The CAD is built from a scan registered to 2–6 mm. Tell us the tolerance your part needs when you request a quote, so it is scoped before any modeling starts.
What file formats do you deliver?
Point clouds come as E57, RCP, RCS or LAS. Drawings come as DWG, DXF or PDF, BIM models as RVT, IFC or NWD, and meshes as OBJ, FBX, STL or GLB. Imagery comes as a 360° panorama or an orthomosaic, and digital twins are web-hosted and measurable. Tell us what your team opens when you request a quote.
How much does reverse engineering cost?
Every project is fixed-price and set on scope: the number and size of the objects, their complexity and the deliverable. Send what needs rebuilding, and we reply within one business day with a method, a schedule and a fixed price.
Is my design kept confidential?
Yes. We sign an NDA on request, and your data is retained and shared on your terms.
